Since joining BSL in 2021 with a Level 4 HNC Diploma in engineering manufacturing, Tom has been a key player in the testing, development, and production of our gas mixing equipment. This week, we sat down together and talked about his career in engineering so far:
So, what made you want to work in an engineering environment?
I’ve always been good at art, so I wanted a career that involved drawing and making things.
During my engineering manufacturing apprenticeship, I got a taste of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) work at a metalworking company, and I really enjoyed it! It allowed me to make use of both my drawing and my technical skills, which was great.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
I’d have to say finishing my Level 4 Diploma in engineering manufacturing and becoming qualified!
What advice would you give to an aspiring draughtsperson?
Definitely get to grips with CAD software!
Find a program, learn to use it, and practice measuring something up to create a 3D model.
What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on recently?
I really enjoyed working on the ViewMix AP Analyser.
We built it from the ground up; designed it, sourced the parts, built prototypes, and refined it.
It was great to see it go from an idea to a finished product!
What’s one piece of software you couldn’t live without?
Solidworks – it’s literally my job!
What would you say is the most challenging part of your job?
There’s a jump between what I know and what Keith (Our Director of Engineering & Quality) knows, but I’m always learning on the job which is good!
What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the start of your career?
Take advantage of any and all learning opportunities!
Do you use any of the skills you’ve learned at work in your daily life? If so, which ones?
I like to use the Maker’s Version of Solidworks at home. I use it to make all sorts of things with my 3D printer – measuring, designing, and printing custom parts for DIY projects.
It’s great practice and I’d recommend it to any aspiring CAD engineers!
What’s a big part of the manufacturing process that many people might not realise?
Testing and prototyping are a huge part of the process: ensuring everything is safe and identifying any potential faults. Then fixing them!
Where would you like to be in 5 years’ time?
I’d love to develop a deeper understanding of the physical workings of our products. Then, maybe one day take over for Julian (our Production & Development Senior Engineer) when he retires!
We’re incredibly lucky to have Tom as part of the team here at BSL Gas Technologies, and we can’t wait to see where the rest of his career takes him! Stay tuned for more exclusive interviews this week, as we celebrate Engineers Week and the brilliant minds behind our gas mixing equipment.
